🇨🇿 Czechia: Who Are Vesna?

The eighth artist in our Who Is series for Eurovision 2023 is Vesna from Czechia.

Vesna was founded in Prague in 2016. The lineup currently consists of Patricie Fuxová (vocals/lyrics/composing), Bára Šůstková (vocals/violin), Olesya Ochepovská (keyboards), Markéta Vedralová (drummer), Tereza Čepková (bass guitar) and Tanita Yankovová (vocals). The name of the band comes from the Slavic goddess of spring.

Vesna released their debut single “Morana”, named after the goddess of winter and death, in 2017. They recorded the single in collaboration with the Czech National Symphony Orchestra. The following singles were “Mokoš”, “Vesna” and “Živa”, named after the goddesses of autumn, spring and summer respectively.

In 2018, after a lineup change, Vesna released their debut album “Pátá bohyně”. The album was nominated for the Discovery of the Year award at Ceny Anděl awards later that year.

In 2019, Vesna released three more singles; “Bílá laň”, “Bečva” and “Nezapomeň”. Later that year, they embarked on their first club tour of Czechia and Slovakia.

During the Covid-19 pandemic, Vesna began work on their second album “Anima”. The album was released in May 2020.

Vesna were selected to represent Czechia after winning ESCZ 2023. They received the most votes from Czech and international voters.

The song that Vesna will perform in Liverpool is called “My Sister’s Crown”. It was written and composed by Patricie Fuxová, Tanita Yankova and Kateryna Vatchenko. It contains lyrics in Czech, English, Ukrainian and Bulgarian. It is only the third Czech entry to contain lyrics in Czech.

Vesna will perform in the second half of the first semi-final on May 9.
